I have signed up for Oversea TV, I hope it is a ligitimate company. One can also purchase the receiver for $ 500.00, a one time fee. Check out their website, it has changed.

Thanks for the tip about Shift TV. I tried the free version and found it OK.
They have an Easter special where you get 20 hours for 3 months. I signed up, but I found that when I tried to record volksmusik shows, they were "denied".
Do you have any idea why?
I know that you have to verify your age to program records after 7 pm, you will need a german reisepass or personal ausweis, if you do not have either, then you can fax them a photocopy of your US ID along with your log in name, then they will lift the restriction on your account manualy.

That was a gret tip about the ID. I have been e-mailing shift TV and getting no response. I figured I would scan my driver's license. I have not received any response yet.
I do not have easy access to a fax machine, so I thought sending an e-mail with a .jpg attached would be easier.
But I only get an autoresponse and no change in my status. All I can record is the stuff before 6 pm.
The programs I have downloaded are GREAT !!! I think this will be a great solution for me. But I want to get at those other programs that start at 8 pm. They are mostly Volksmusik and that is what I am interested in.
I have experienced a slow respond from them in the past. I am sure that a scanned version of your USID would work for them. I descoverd if you use a harsher tone with them, that you will get a quicker response. you know how germans can be.
Well it took a couple days, but I did get an answer from Shift TV. They have a rule about proof that you are over 18 to record programs after 18:00 and it is a problem for those of us who don't have a German Passport.
But they accepted my american drivers license and everything is GREAT!
I love having the freedom to chose exactly the programs I want to view and do so when I have the time, and will no longer miss some of my favorite programs. In fact, now I have access to so many more programs than I had on German TV.
