I am outraged by this announcement from German TV. I was quit happy with German TV. DW TV is a great news channel. But German TV offered the news from DW-TV and entertainment programs from ZDF and ARD. I want these programs back. I hope that more people feel this way.
I believe that this decition is a great blow to against the German culture abroad (meaning in the US). I contacted all the affiliates involved to criticize their dicition. They belief that the "new German language package" that is offered by Dish Network, is a great replacement. I have to disagree with that statement. ARD and ZDF offer quality family programs, were Prosieben's programs are a bit "R" Rated.
I will add more comments about this topic in the future, and I hope other outraged ex-German TV watchers find this place and post their own comments. Maybe there is a way to convince DW-TV to bring ARD and ZDF programs back to the US.

I loved GermanTV (as I posted on my blog) but I cannot summon outrage; if the German taxpayers don't see the point of subsidizing my tastes I find it hard to make a case that would convince them. It was fun while it lasted, but it seems we viewers could not summon sufficient interest to justify the experiment continuing.
While German-TV was "alive" the broadcasting accompanied me 7 days a week.
I followed the talk shows like Christiansen/Maisberger/Beckmann, political debates, the ARD Buffet/ Maintower/ Marienhof/ Wetten Dass/ Tatort/ “live” programs like the Mardi Gras from Koeln/Mainz, one of the highlights.
What I do not understand is why did we not get any knowledge of the changes prior to then just a a week or two. When it became known, it did not sound that we would loose the ARD/ZDF programs, it sounded as SAT1 would include those in their broadcasting.
I feel we should have had the opportunity to voice our opinions to those who made the decision and I am convinced that the taxpayers don’t even know about the funding or who paid what.
in may of 2005 german TV announced that they have 20000 subscribers. they declared that number to be a success. what happend in those 9 month that would justify to the powers to be that german tv is no longer a success.
after crunching some simple numbers i discoverd that german tv was generating 2.4 million dollars per year that would go toward the delivery of the "German TV" signal.
besides... is'nt DW-TV also being subsidized by german taxpayers?
Same here. The "end" of German TV is perceived as a lost both for its entertainment value as well as its rooting characteristic. News are news, they are like hotels, some are of higher standards but in the end they do rarely make you feel what it is to be German. GTV did it. It is therefore not only a support for its diaspora but the best cultural device around... in fact to the question "Can Deutschland succeed to transmit its culture through Krimis and "sitcoms", the simple answer is "much better".

As a German teacher I am also missing German TV and so are my students, who had developed a great interest in shows such as "Wetten, dass ..." and "Unser Charly". Prosiebensateins is a poor substitute; the programming is much more American-style and we already have plenty of that. Deutsche Welle has way too much news - I don't need it every hour! What annoys me most is the short notice about German TV going off the air and the fact that we subscribers we not asked if we would be willing to pay more for the programming. I would have gladly paid double to retain German TV programming; it was such a good resource.
I spent 30 years (my entire adult life'til now!) working for the US military in Germany, and while I enjoyed the military channel, AFN, I mostly watched German TV. I was a big fan of the so-called 3rd programmes of ARD (i.e., BR3, HR3, etc.). Once I moved back to the USA and got German-TV thru satellite, I was a happy camper, tho' I loathe Dish Network. Now it's gone. I tried to get my German-speaking friends interested enough to subscribe, but inertia set in for them, I guess. And ProSiebSatEins is OK, but just OK. DW-TV is OK, too, but I'd rather have all the shows in German rather than in English. Looks like it's back to bugging my German friends to record shows for me and mail the tapes to the USA. Sigh.
Now I get SAT1 and SHIFT TV and I am getting more variety then before and I very pleased with ShiftTV which is periodically upgraded and modified and I am not missing German-TV at all.
It is just shameful that our rich country can't afford the few bucks to distribute already finished productions of a good mix of entertainment, news, movies, and informative talk-shows. Pro-Sieben/Sat1 sucks,
is naive and boring. I wish DW-TV would adapt some good shows from ARD/ZDF like Tatort and other good made productions.

My disappointment was expressed to German TV management prior to discontinuance of the station's programming. There must be some way to bring back this great connection to the German culture, i.e. monthly broadcasting fees, commercial time, etc. I'm sure the previous viewers would be willing to sacrifice a few $ in order to restore this station.
Currently, to retain our connection to German culture and the language, we watch ProSiebenSat1 almost exclusively but are not thrilled with some of the programming, which is not family-friendly. Although this has been improving somewhat, it still has a long way to go before reaching the quality of former German TV.
Is there someone "out there" who knows the appropriate steps to take which could possibly restore German TV or similar broadcasting?
Perhaps former viewers need to take the "bull by the horns" and campaign to restore good German programming, remembering the old adage about the squeaky wheel.
Any advice or comments would be most appreciated.

you want to start to get the ones out who took away german TV?
20,000 is what is took for them to break even.... since moving from the globecast to dishnetwork platform the numbers went through the roof and when dish added prosieben it finished at 26,000 you would be even more outrage to know that the replaced the satellite feed from German tv from germany to dwlatin america .... looks the like real truth was D-welle didnt know how to handle what they had!
